After-Burn (noun): the feeling one has in reaction to having displayed new, exciting healthy behaviors. Anything to do with owning our power and taking care of ourselves. Might include such feelings as guilt, shame, fear. The emotional backlash of finally deciding to do what is right by us.

Such a double whammy. We finally muster the courage to set boundaries, speak directly or ask for what we need. And then on top of that, we face the after-burn. We beat ourselves up for acting in a self-respecting manner.

It never ends, does it? This work toward wholeness.

Let those after-burn feelings burn out. Don’t take them seriously. Use them as a reminder that you are headed in the right direction. One toward your highest, best self. A journey you have the right to be on.
